The Aphex 204 Aural Exciter with Optical Big Bottom is a professional two-channel psychoacoustic audio enhancer engineered to dramatically improve the clarity, presence, and low-end power of audio signals. Operating as a 1U rackmount device, it features two independent channels that can be utilized in stereo or dual-mono setups for studio recording, live sound, and broadcasting. Rather than using traditional EQ boosts that artificially raise gain and introduce noise, the Aural Exciter section utilizes a side-chain design to synthesize even-order harmonics above a user-tunable high-pass corner frequency. This process restores natural brightness and improves vocal intelligibility while dramatically increasing perceived loudness without increasing the signal's peak output level.

Complementing the high-frequency enhancement, the Aphex 204 incorporates proprietary Optical Big Bottom technology to enrich the low end of a mix, bass guitar, or drum track. This specialized circuit dynamically compresses and extends bass frequencies to deliver a tighter, deeper, and more resonant sub-bass punch without overloading connected sound systems or damaging loudspeaker drivers. The intuitive silver front panel provides individual Tune, Harmonics/Drive, and Mix knobs for both processing sections on each channel, alongside illuminated bypass switches.
