Description

The Merlin digital loudspeaker and network management system is designed to control and drive professional, multichannel loudspeaker systems from complex, high-end touring systems to distributed installed systems. It is a digital matrix processor configured as a 4-input/10-output, 1U device with accompanying VU-NET™ software. Any input or group of inputs can be routed to any output, and VU-NET provides full control of Merlin via an intuitive graphical user interface running on a wired PC or wireless tablet. Merlin can form the heart of a networked sound system with control of up to 254 U-NET™ equipped devices using VU-NET control software via a wired or wireless Ethernet connection. For simplicity and flexibility, Merlin can also be controlled directly from the front panel. Merlin is the perfect front-end for line array systems, providing the full complement of loudspeaker management tools, such as crossover filters, parametric EQ, delay, gain, and limiting. Read more

About the Martin Audio Merlin Digital System Controller

The Merlin is a dedicated digital system controller designed to serve as the central processing and optimization hub for specific professional loudspeaker systems, ensuring they perform as an integrated, coherent sound source. This unit is not a general-purpose DSP but an application-specific processor loaded with proprietary presets and algorithms tailored to the exact electro-acoustic characteristics of compatible loudspeakers and subwoofers. Its primary function is to provide the necessary system alignment, which includes precise crossover filtering, phase correction, driver equalization, and time alignment. This ensures that multi-way passive loudspeakers and subwoofer arrays work together seamlessly, delivering the intended frequency response, directivity, and sonic character as designed by the manufacturer, straight out of the box.

Engineered for both touring and installation environments, the Merlin typically features a robust chassis with comprehensive input and output connectivity to interface with system amplifiers. It often includes multiple input sources with priority switching—useful for background music and paging systems—and offers output zoning to manage different loudspeaker groups within a venue. Control is facilitated through a combination of front-panel navigation, dedicated software, or, in some iterations, a removable touch-panel interface that allows for intuitive on-site adjustments. This focus on user-friendly operation enables system technicians to confidently deploy and tune complex systems without requiring deep, model-specific acoustic expertise, as the critical voicing and protection parameters are pre-configured.

The value of the Merlin controller lies in its ability to unlock the full potential of the loudspeaker system it is designed for. By applying optimized, manufacturer-defined settings, it guarantees system consistency, maximizes acoustic output, and provides protective limiting to safeguard loudspeaker components. This turnkey approach to system processing reduces setup time, minimizes the risk of operator error, and delivers predictable, high-fidelity results. For rental companies, system integrators, and sound engineers, the Merlin represents a critical link in the signal chain, transforming a collection of individual loudspeakers and amplifiers into a reliable, high-performance sonic instrument.
