About the Shure MX396/C Tri-Element Boundary Microphone

The Shure MX396/C Tri-Element is an advanced boundary microphone system engineered for sophisticated audio capture scenarios requiring multiple discrete channels from a single, low-profile unit. This microphone incorporates three independently addressable condenser capsules arranged within a common housing, allowing it to function as a compact three-channel audio source. By leveraging the boundary layer principle, where the microphone is placed directly on a reflective surface like a conference table or stage floor, it effectively eliminates phase cancellations, resulting in a naturally extended frequency response with exceptional clarity and presence for speech and instrumentation. This design is particularly powerful for complex applications such as multi-party teleconferencing, immersive recording, or theatrical productions where isolating different sound sources or creating a detailed stereo image from a discreet location is paramount.

The three cardioid-pattern elements are strategically positioned and internally isolated to provide excellent channel separation, minimizing crosstalk and allowing each capsule to be processed independently through separate mixer channels or DSP inputs. This enables audio engineers to apply individual gain, equalization, and dynamics processing to each segment of the pickup area, offering unparalleled control over the sound field. For example, in a boardroom setting, the microphone can provide discrete audio feeds for different seating sections, while in a studio, it can be configured for left, center, and right capture to create a robust stereo or surround image. The sleek, low-profile housing is built for permanent installation, featuring a durable finish and integrated, strain-relieved cabling for reliable, long-term performance.

Requiring standard phantom power, the MX396/C delivers three balanced, low-noise audio signals of professional quality, suitable for the most demanding reinforcement, broadcasting, and recording environments. Its ability to provide multiple high-fidelity channels from a single, unobtrusive point on a surface makes it an exceptionally versatile and powerful tool. It solves significant challenges in system design by reducing clutter and simplifying setup, all while delivering the audio fidelity and flexible control required by audio professionals in corporate, governmental, judicial, and performing arts venues.
