Description

The S-2416 24x16 Digital Snake Stage Unit from Roland solves two age-old problems of live sound and fixed installations at once. It allows you to transfer a total of 32 input and 24 output channels of high-quality audio without signal degradation over an extremely long distance, and the cable pull-through issue is a snap in fixed installations and a breeze to setup compared to using analog snakes. The S-2416 features 24 input x 16 output analog channels and 8 input x 8 output digital channels in a 4U rack-mount chassis. All input sections are equipped with discrete mic preamps designed to be transparent with uncolored sound; they can be controlled using any V-Mixer console, R-1000, an S-4000R unit connected by RS-232C, or by using the S-4000 RCS remote-control software on a computer (Mac or Windows) connected via USB. Furthermore, each Neutrik XLR jack connector features three-colored lights that communicate the status of phantom power, clipping, and signal presence. In addition, two REAC Neutrik Ethercon connectors, a main and a backup, are provided to create a redundant REAC network just in case a problem occurs with the main line. The operation switches to the backup connector with no break in the audio. Word clock in & out for 24-bit / 96, 48, or 44.1 kHz sample rates is also supported. The Rear Panel provides AES/EBU connectivity (25-pin D-sub type) for 8 channels of input and output providing connection to speaker processors, amps, and other devices capable of AES/EBU input and/or output. This is assigned to channels 25 through 32 and output is selectable by a mode switch. Read more

About the Roland S-2416 24x16 Digital Snake Stage Unit

The Roland S-2416 is a digital stage snake unit that forms the core of a modern, cable-saving audio network for live sound and studio applications. This robust stage box is designed to be positioned directly in the performance area, where it consolidates 24 microphone/line inputs and 16 line outputs into a single, streamlined digital connection back to a compatible digital mixing console or interface. By converting analog signals to digital at the source, it eliminates the need for long, heavy, and expensive multicore analog cable runs, dramatically simplifying setup, improving signal integrity, and reducing potential points of failure. The unit is built with a heavy-duty metal casing to withstand the physical rigors of the stage environment, including potential impacts, cable strain, and the general wear and tear of touring.

Each of the 24 input channels is equipped with a professional-grade microphone preamplifier featuring high headroom, low noise, and precise gain control, which can be managed remotely from the mixing console. These inputs accept balanced signals via XLR connectors, making them suitable for a vast array of microphones and direct boxes from vocal, instrument, and drum sources. The 16 outputs provide balanced analog signals via XLR connectors, typically used to send mixed audio from the console back to the stage for power amplifiers driving monitor wedges, in-ear monitor transmitters, or additional processing gear. Remote control capabilities allow the front-of-house engineer to adjust preamp gain, apply +48V phantom power, and set polarity for each channel without needing to access the stage box physically.

The digital audio transport is handled via a single Ethernet cable using a proprietary or standards-based audio networking protocol, connecting the S-2416 to a matching digital snake head unit or directly to a digital mixer's expansion port. This system supports high-resolution audio with low latency, ensuring pristine sound quality and tight synchronization between stage and console. The Roland S-2416 digital stage unit represents a significant advancement in audio infrastructure, offering touring engineers, fixed installations, and rental companies a reliable, high-channel-count solution that enhances workflow efficiency, reduces cabling complexity, and delivers the clean, transparent signal path demanded by professional audio production.
