Danley Sound Labs

Danley Sound Labs SM80 12" Coaxial Speaker

$2,595.00

The Danley Sound Labs SM80 is an engineering marvel, packing massive power and functionality into a surprisingly compact, pole-mountable enclosure. It integrates a 12-inch woofer and a 1.4-inch tweeter into a single, highly efficient molded Synergy Horn, which ensures a phase-coherent, full-range audio experience with uniform coverage. This unique design allows a pair of SM80s to effectively cover the mid and high frequencies for most venues without needing additional delay speakers. The speaker is built for demanding professional use, housed in a robust 18mm, 13-ply Baltic birch enclosure that is protected by a durable, water-resistant polyurea coating. This construction makes it highly resistant to impact and atmospheric conditions, ideal for both touring and permanent installation (specific "Install" and "Touring" versions are available). With a continuous power rating of 400 watts and a peak rating of 1600 watts, the 8-ohm loudspeaker achieves an impressive maximum peak SPL of 134 dB, making it a serious performer in a wide array of sound reinforcement scenarios.

About the Danley Sound Labs SM80 12" Coaxial Speaker

The Danley Sound Labs SM80 is a compact, high-output loudspeaker that leverages proprietary synergy horn technology and a coaxial driver design to deliver exceptional pattern control, clarity, and power in a remarkably small form factor. This 12-inch, two-way, full-range speaker is engineered to serve as a versatile tool for both portable sound reinforcement and permanent installations, suitable for applications ranging from live music and corporate AV to houses of worship and theaters. At its core is a true coaxial design where a high-frequency compression driver is mounted concentrically within the low-frequency cone, ensuring the acoustic centers of both transducers are aligned at the throat of the synergy horn. This alignment, combined with Danley's patented tapped horn loading for the low frequencies, results in exceptional phase coherence, uniform frequency response, and a consistent directivity pattern that holds from the lower midrange through the high frequencies.

The synergy horn is the defining feature, providing constant directivity across a wide bandwidth. This controlled dispersion, typically 80 degrees horizontal by 60 degrees vertical, ensures even coverage throughout the listening area without the hot spots or frequency-dependent beaming common in conventional designs. The result is a speaker that delivers articulate, intelligible sound with high fidelity, whether used as a main PA speaker, a stage monitor, or an installed system component. Despite its compact size, the SM80 is capable of very high peak output levels with low distortion, thanks to the efficient loading of the drivers by the horn and the robust construction of its components. This allows it to compete with much larger conventional cabinets in terms of output and throw distance while occupying significantly less space.

Built into a rugged, trapezoidal plywood cabinet with extensive internal bracing, the SM80 is designed for durability on the road. It features multiple integrated rigging points compatible with standard industry hardware, allowing for secure flying or stacking. The cabinet is typically finished in a durable black texture coat. Input is via dual NL4 SpeakON connectors, facilitating daisy-chaining. The SM80's combination of coaxial clarity, synergy horn pattern control, high output, and compact size makes it a highly respected choice for sound professionals who require accurate, predictable, and powerful sound reproduction from a scalable and manageable loudspeaker.
