The dbx 286s is a versatile all-in-one channel strip that combines a studio-grade microphone/instrument preamp with four independent processing sections that can be used separately or together. Instead of dealing with multiple pieces of outboard gear and complicated signal routing, the 286s streamlines the entire vocal and instrument processing chain into a single, efficient unit with a clean signal path.

The unit features extensive input gain control, switchable +48V phantom power, and an 80Hz high-pass filter to help eliminate unwanted low-frequency noise such as hum, rumble, and wind interference. Its built-in dbx OverEasy compressor helps smooth out inconsistent audio levels for natural-sounding acoustic tracks or delivers the punchy, upfront vocal tone dbx is known for. A frequency-adjustable De-Esser reduces harsh sibilance in vocals and minimizes high-frequency distortion from instruments like cymbals.

Additional tone shaping comes from the integrated Enhancer section, which includes HF Detail and LF Detail controls to add clarity, brightness, warmth, and depth to vocals and instruments. The Expander/Gate section helps reduce unwanted background noise, headphone bleed, or amplifier hiss with adjustable threshold and ratio settings for precise control.

The 286s also includes comprehensive LED metering and status indicators for easy monitoring. Connectivity options include an XLR microphone input compatible with balanced or unbalanced microphones, a 1/4" TRS line input for instruments or playback sources, and an insert jack that provides access between the preamp and processing stages for integrating external processors into the signal chain.
