Barcus Berry 4000-BRB Planar Wave Piano

$174.80

The Barcus Berry 4000-BRB Planar Wave Piano (or 4000 System) is a piezo crystal sensor and preamplifier system designed to amplify acoustic instruments, specifically pianos and harps. The pickup technology captures the sound from the instrument's soundboard, isolating it from ambient room noise and potential feedback. This allows for a clean, full-spectrum pickup of the instrument's natural tone for live performance or studio recording without requiring multiple microphones. The system is designed for quick and easy installation without modifying the instrument.

The Barcus Berry 4000-BRB system includes a Planar Wave sensor and a 4000XL piezo preamplifier. The sensor is designed to pick up natural energy waves from the soundboard while reducing feedback. The system provides a balanced, full-frequency sound and the active direct box can use either a 9-volt battery or phantom power. It offers both a 1/4-inch monitor output and a balanced XLR main output with ground lift and 12dB pad switch. The sensor attaches to the soundboard with adhesive, requiring no tools or modifications to the instrument.

About the Barcus Berry 4000-BRB Planar Wave Piano

The Barcus Berry 4000-BRB Planar Wave Piano is a specialized contact pickup system designed to capture the authentic, full-range sound of an acoustic piano with remarkable clarity and minimal feedback. Unlike traditional microphones placed near the soundboard, the 4000-BRB utilizes a proprietary "Planar Wave" transducer technology. This thin, flexible sensor is permanently installed inside the piano, typically adhered directly to the underside of the soundboard or cast iron plate. It responds to the vibrational energy of the entire instrument rather than air pressure, resulting in a detailed, natural piano tone that captures the nuances of the performer's touch, from delicate harmonics to powerful low-end resonance, while effectively rejecting ambient stage noise and monitor spill.

Installation is a professional task, requiring precise placement and calibration to achieve optimal tonal balance across all 88 keys. Once installed, the system is virtually invisible and becomes a permanent part of the instrument. The pickup feeds a dedicated outboard preamp/processor (often included or required) that provides phantom power, gain control, equalization, and sometimes stereo imaging effects to tailor the sound for reinforcement or recording. This method of amplification is favored in live settings—especially loud stages—where standard microphones would be prone to feedback and would pick up excessive bleed from other instruments, allowing the piano to be amplified to any level while maintaining its acoustic character.

For touring musicians, theaters, and houses of worship that require consistent, reliable, and feedback-free piano amplification, the Barcus Berry 4000-BRB system offers a premium solution. It transforms an acoustic piano into a consistently mixable instrument suitable for the demands of modern live sound and broadcast. By capturing the essence of the piano directly from its structure, it delivers a purer, more controllable signal than microphones can typically achieve in challenging acoustic environments, making it a trusted choice for professional piano amplification.
