About the Tannoy System 800 Nearfield Monitor Loudspeaker

The System 800 represents a classic design in professional nearfield monitoring, renowned for its accurate and uncolored sonic reproduction in critical listening environments. As a compact, two-way passive loudspeaker, it is engineered to provide a truthful audio reference for recording, mixing, and broadcast applications where space is limited but audio fidelity is paramount. The monitor's design philosophy centers on delivering a flat, extended frequency response with precise stereo imaging, allowing engineers to make confident decisions about tonal balance, dynamic processing, and spatial effects. Its time-aligned driver configuration and carefully tuned crossover ensure that sound from both the woofer and tweeter arrives at the listener's ears in phase, contributing to its reputation for clarity and detail.

The speaker employs a 8-inch polymer-coated paper cone woofer and a 1-inch soft-dome tweeter, a combination chosen for its smooth integration and low distortion. The woofer handles mid-range and bass frequencies with authority and speed, while the soft-dome tweeter reproduces high frequencies with a smooth, non-fatiguing character that is essential for long listening sessions. The vented, bass-reflex enclosure is constructed from high-density MDF and is internally braced to minimize unwanted cabinet resonances, ensuring that the sound produced is solely from the drivers and not colored by the enclosure itself. The result is a monitor that reveals subtle nuances in a mix without adding artificial hype or sheen.

Versatility in placement and integration is a key strength. The System 800 can be positioned on studio meter bridges, desktop stands, or dedicated monitor isolation pads. Its passive design requires connection to a high-quality external power amplifier, giving users the flexibility to choose an amplifier that matches their specific power and sonic preferences. The straightforward, no-frills approach to its design—focusing on robust construction, proven driver technology, and accurate acoustic performance—has cemented its status as a reliable workhorse in project studios, post-production suites, and mobile broadcast trucks worldwide, where consistent and trustworthy monitoring is essential.
