About the Blackmagic Design BMD-CINEURSANWFRCAM Camera Fiber Converter
The Blackmagic Design Camera Fiber Converter is a specialized interface unit designed to integrate URSA Broadcast cameras and similar models into long-distance, fiber-optic based broadcast systems. This converter acts as a critical bridge, converting the camera's baseband video, audio, intercom, power, and control signals into a single, bidirectional stream of light that can travel over a single strand of single-mode fiber optic cable. It is engineered for live broadcast environments, such as outside broadcast (OB) trucks, sports arenas, and large studio complexes, where cameras need to be positioned hundreds of meters or even kilometers away from the production switcher and control room without any signal degradation. By utilizing fiber optics, the system gains immense immunity to electromagnetic interference, ground loops, and voltage differences that plague traditional copper cable runs.
The unit is typically mounted on the rear of a compatible URSA Broadcast camera, connecting directly to the camera's 12G-SDI and data ports. It provides two key connections: a robust Fischer fiber connector for the main optical link and a standard Ethernet port for local control or data. At the other end of the fiber run, an identical converter unit is connected to the broadcast infrastructure, where it demultiplexes the optical signal back into separate SDI video, audio, camera control (CCU), and intercom channels. This setup allows the camera operator all the usual freedoms of movement and positioning while giving the director and technical staff in the control room full remote control over the camera's settings—including exposure, paint, and lens control—as if it were connected via a traditional, bulky triax or multicore cable system.
This fiber solution represents a significant modernization of broadcast camera connectivity, offering far greater bandwidth, lighter weight cables, and longer reach than legacy copper-based systems. The converter supports ultra-high-definition video formats, including 4K and high-frame-rate HD, over its optical link. Its design emphasizes reliability and integration, featuring status indicators for signal and link integrity. For broadcasters investing in fiber infrastructure, this converter is an essential component that future-proofs their camera links, enabling the highest quality video transmission with unparalleled stability and remote operational capability, essential for today's demanding multi-camera live productions.
