About the Blackmagic Design BMD-CINEURSANWFRSTUD Studio Fiber Converter
The Blackmagic Design Studio Fiber Converter is a critical interface unit designed to establish long-distance, fiber-optic camera links within a professional broadcast studio or live production environment. This converter is specifically engineered to work with Blackmagic Studio Cameras, creating a complete single-cable solution that transmits not only ultra-high-definition video but also power, camera control data, intercom audio, and tally signals over a single strand of single-mode fiber. It enables the placement of cameras hundreds of meters away from the central production control room without any signal degradation, a common limitation of traditional copper-based SDI or HDMI cables. This capability is essential for large studios, sports arenas, worship centers, and broadcast facilities where cameras must be positioned at significant distances from the technical core.
The system operates in pairs: one converter is attached to the Studio Camera, and another is mounted in the equipment rack near the production switcher, typically an ATEM model. The camera-side converter connects directly to the camera's 12G-SDI and data ports, multiplexing all signals into an optical format for transmission. The rack-side converter demultiplexes the optical signal back into discrete 12G-SDI video, return feed, Ethernet for control, and audio. This setup grants the director and technical staff in the control room full remote control over the camera's settings—including paint, exposure, and lens parameters—via the ATEM Software Control or a hardware panel. The camera operator retains local control but benefits from the clean, cable-free connection and receives program return and intercom through the same fiber.
Built for reliability in 24/7 broadcast operations, the Studio Fiber Converter features robust construction with status indicators for monitoring link health. It supports the full bandwidth of 12G-SDI, allowing for 4Kp60 video transmission, ensuring future compatibility with higher resolution standards. By leveraging fiber optic technology, the system provides complete immunity to electromagnetic interference and ground loops, guaranteeing a stable and pristine video and audio feed. This converter is the cornerstone of a scalable, professional camera infrastructure, allowing broadcasters to build flexible, high-performance multi-camera systems with dramatically simplified cabling and extended reach.
