The Blackmagic Design OpenGear Optical Fiber Converter is a professional broadcast module designed for installation in a compatible openGear frame, providing high-performance conversion between electrical SDI signals and optical signals for long-distance fiber transmission. This card addresses the critical infrastructure need in broadcast facilities, outside broadcast trucks, and large venues to transport high-definition and ultra-high-definition video over extended distances without signal degradation. It takes standard SDI video inputs—supporting formats from SD up to 12G-SDI for 4K—and converts them into a stream of light for transmission over single-mode fiber optic cable. At the receiving end, another identical converter card typically converts the optical signal back to electrical SDI, completing a reliable, high-bandwidth link that is immune to electromagnetic interference, ground loops, and voltage differences.

As part of the modular openGear system, this converter leverages the frame's centralized power, cooling, and management for robust, 24/7 operation. The card is engineered for signal integrity, featuring re-clocking on the SDI input to clean up and retime the signal before optical conversion. It utilizes standard LC Duplex fiber connectors, which are widely adopted in broadcast fiber infrastructure, ensuring easy integration into existing plant or new installations.
