The Blackmagic Design BMD-SWATEMPSW04K ATEM Production Studio 4K is a compact, high-performance 1U rack-mount live production switcher designed for professional broadcasters, studios, and A/V professionals working with various video formats up to Ultra HD 4K resolution. This model offers the powerful features typically found in large studio switchers but in a portable and durable form factor. It provides four simultaneous inputs consisting of a mix of 6G-SDI and HDMI 4K connections. Crucially, every single input is equipped with a built-in frame synchronizer and a standards converter, allowing users to seamlessly integrate different cameras, video formats, and non-genlocked sources like laptops without encountering video glitches or requiring expensive external conversion equipment.

The switcher is controlled via the free ATEM Software Control panel for Mac and Windows, which connects via Ethernet or USB. The front panel also includes buttons and an LCD screen for direct control over the auxiliary (AUX) outputs, enabling operators to quickly route any source to a specific monitor or recorder. Beyond basic switching, the ATEM Production Studio 4K offers creative features including a built-in 10-input audio mixer that handles embedded audio from all video inputs as well as dedicated analog XLR and HiFi RCA inputs.

Keying capabilities are robust, featuring one upstream keyer that supports chroma, linear, luma, and pattern keying for professional green screen effects or graphics integration. There are also two downstream keyers available for adding titles, logos, and lower thirds from the internal media pool, which can store up to 20 full-frame RGBA still graphics. For monitoring, the system provides a comprehensive multiview output via both SDI and HDMI, allowing a single screen to display all inputs, preview, and program outputs with customizable labels and audio metering.
