About the Evertz 7705CWDM-D8 8-Channel Coarse Wave Division Multiplexing Optical Module

The Evertz 7705CWDM-D8 is an optical module designed for the 7700 series chassis, providing an 8-channel Coarse Wavelength Division Multiplexing (CWDM) demultiplexing function. This card is integral to building high-density, cost-effective fiber optic networks in broadcast and production facilities by enabling a single fiber pair to carry up to eight independent signals simultaneously. Each signal is assigned a specific, non-overlapping ITU-T standard wavelength within the C-Band (e.g., 1470nm to 1610nm). The D8 module's role is to receive the combined optical stream from a distant multiplexer (Mux) and separate it back into the eight individual wavelengths, each output to a dedicated port for connection to downstream equipment such as video receivers, audio processors, or IP gateways. This dramatically increases the capacity of existing fiber infrastructure without the need to lay additional cables.

Engineered for reliability and passive operation, the core filtering technology within the module is based on thin-film filters, which require no electrical power to perform the wavelength separation, resulting in excellent stability and low heat generation. The module includes monitoring circuitry that reports the optical power level present at each demultiplexed output via the chassis's management system, allowing for proactive link health assessment and simplifying troubleshooting. It is designed to work in conjunction with a complementary multiplexer module (like a 7705CWDM-M8) to form a complete, bi-directional CWDM link, efficiently aggregating multiple video, audio, or data feeds between two points, such as a main production facility and a remote venue or satellite truck.

Housed within the scalable 7700-series ecosystem, the 7705CWDM-D8 benefits from centralized power (for monitoring functions only), hot-swappability, and integration with the frame's control software. Its front panel provides individual LC or SC connectors for each wavelength channel and status LEDs. By utilizing CWDM technology in a modular form factor, this card provides broadcast engineers with a flexible and future-proof solution for maximizing their fiber plant investment, simplifying cable management, and building robust, high-bandwidth signal transport networks that can scale with evolving production needs.
