Building upon the proven foundation of its predecessor, the F800 adds advanced creative capabilities including native 1080/23.98P recording and variable frame rate functionality for cinematic slow and quick motion effects. At the heart of the camcorder are three newly developed 2/3-inch Power HAD FX progressive CCD sensors at 1920 x 1080 native resolution, delivering exceptional sensitivity of F12 at 50Hz and an outstanding signal-to-noise ratio of 59 dB in Noise Suppression mode. The 14-bit A/D conversion enables rich gradation reproduction in mid-to-dark tones while eliminating pre-knee signal compression in highlights for up to 600% dynamic range.

Creative production features distinguish the PDW-F800 from its predecessor. The variable frame rate function allows operators to capture slow motion or quick motion effects, with recording frame rates selectable from 4 to 60 fps when playing back at 23.98P, supporting up to 24x quick motion and 1/2x slow motion. A professional optical filter system includes separate ND and CC filter wheels, offering ND positions for Clear, 1/4, 1/16, and 1/64, plus independent CC color correction filters for Cross, 3200K, 4300K, and 6300K. The user gamma function enables custom gamma curve creation via Sony's CVP File Editor software, loaded through Memory Stick media.
