About the Digidesign Pro Tools Mix Farm Card

The Digidesign (now Avid) Pro Tools MIX Farm Card is a legacy, PCI-based digital signal processing (DSP) expansion card engineered specifically for the classic Pro Tools|24 MIX system. Introduced in the late 1990s, this hardware was an essential building block for professional recording studios, designed to supplement the system's primary MIX Core card. By adding a MIX Farm card to the computer's PCI slot, engineers could exponentially increase the system's processing power, allowing for higher simultaneous track counts, complex internal routing, and the ability to run multiple DSP-hungry TDM (Time Division Multiplexing) plug-ins without taxing the host computer's CPU.

The card connects to the MIX Core card (and other Farm cards) internally using a proprietary TDM ribbon cable, creating a high-bandwidth digital audio bus across the PCI slots. In addition to raw processing power, the MIX Farm card features an external peripheral port on its rear bracket. This allowed studios to connect additional legacy Digidesign audio interfaces—such as the 888/24, 882/20, or 1622 I/O—directly to the Farm card, effectively expanding the physical input and output capacity of the studio.
