EAW SM-222 Speaker
The SM222 high output slant stage monitor system is designed to provide performers with clear audio foldback, regardless of the ambient sound levels on stage. It employs the same configuration as the legendary EAW SM600 stage monitor, featuring two 12-inch bass drivers paired with a large format compression driver. The dual 12-inch low-frequency driver setup enables the SM222 to achieve greater sound pressure levels than comparable designs based on a single 15-inch woofer, while also delivering superior response linearity in the lower mid-band.
The SM222 is the result of an extensive engineering collaboration between EAW’s Vice President of Engineering Kenton Forsythe and Carlo Sound’s Rich Carpenter and John Logan. The objective of this project was to replicate the output and sound quality of the SM600 in a more compact form factor with reduced stage height, thus improving sight lines. The SM222 surpasses those initial goals, integrating a newly developed Forsythe-designed high-frequency horn that fits precisely between the two woofers.
Constructed with traditional EAW durability standards, the SM222 is built to endure rigorous road use. It features a heavy-gauge perforated steel grille, recessed handles, and EP Series input connectors. Optional features include an internal passive crossover and travel covers. Additionally, in the third quarter of 1986, EAW planned to introduce a RCF two-inch exit compression driver for the SM222, along with an optional closely coupled electronic controller.
