About the Meyer Sound HD-1 High Definition Audio Monitor

The Meyer Sound HD-1 is a self-powered, two-way high-definition audio monitor engineered for ultra-precise near-field monitoring in critical recording, broadcast, post-production, and mastering environments. Introduced as a groundbreaking studio monitor, the HD-1 was designed to approximate a true point-source radiator, yielding exceptionally broad and consistent directivity with a generous "sweet spot" that allows engineers to work confidently without being locked to a single listening position. The system incorporates an 8-inch cone low-frequency driver with a 2-inch voice coil and a 1-inch soft dome tweeter, both of proprietary Meyer Sound design, housed in a vented oak veneer enclosure with a smooth black semi-gloss finish.

The HD-1 integrates sophisticated active electronics directly into the cabinet, including a two-channel complementary MOSFET power amplifier delivering 150 watts burst to the LF driver and 75 watts burst to the HF driver. The amplifier operates in Class A at low to moderate listening levels below 90 dB SPL and transitions to Class AB at higher outputs, ensuring minimal distortion across the entire dynamic range. The active crossover utilizes optimized pole-zero filter combinations that complement the transducer response to achieve acoustical transparency and flat phase response. An electronically balanced input with switchable sensitivity accommodates either +4 dBu professional or -10 dBV consumer nominal levels via a standard female XLR connector.

The HD-1 delivers a flat free-field frequency response within ±1 dB from 40 Hz to 20 kHz, extending to 32 Hz at the -3 dB points, with a maximum peak SPL of 125 dB at 1 meter and a signal-to-noise ratio exceeding 100 dB. Its 60-degree by 60-degree coverage pattern provides consistent off-axis response critical for near-field monitoring applications. An innovative magnetic field cancellation technique in the driver magnet structures minimizes stray magnetic flux, allowing the HD-1 to be placed as close as two feet (60 cm) from sensitive color CRT video monitors without causing color purity distortion. The loudspeaker is protected by rugged steel grilles and includes a three-pin IEC male AC receptacle with a rear-panel voltage selector switch supporting 100, 120, 220, or 240 V AC operation (90-260 V range). The HD-1 measures 12 inches wide by 16 inches high by 16 inches deep (including amplifier chassis and dome clearance) and weighs 51 pounds (23 kg). Each unit is individually calibrated at Meyer Sound's Berkeley, California factory, and pairs are factory-aligned for pinpoint stereo imaging.
