Powered subwoofers have built-in amplification - just connect the signal and power, and you're ready to go. Passive subwoofers require an external amplifier matched to the sub's power handling and impedance. Powered subs simplify setup; passive subs offer more flexibility in amp selection and system design.

Driver size and cabinet size affect output, low-frequency extension, and portability. Single 18" subs are the standard for most pro audio applications, balancing powerful bass with manageable weight. Dual subwoofers with two 18" drivers deliver more output and deeper extension for larger venues or high volume requirements. Compact 12" or 15" PA subs work well for smaller rooms or installs where space is tight.

You can, but matching brands often simplifies system tuning. Manufacturers design subs to pair with their tops, with matched voicing and preset crossover points. If you're mixing brands, you'll need to handle crossover alignment and time correction through your processor or DSP to find the sweet spot for your audio setup.

Cardioid configurations use multiple subs or specialized enclosures to reject low-frequency energy behind the array. This reduces bass buildup on stage, giving performers and monitors cleaner sound while directing more energy toward the audience. It's common for large event productions where stage volume control matters.

You can, but pro audio subs are designed for different applications. They prioritize high SPL output and durability over the lower frequency refinement and compact footprint typical of home theater subs. For critical listening or home audio setups, consider whether the cone driver configuration and cabinet size fit your space and sound quality goals.

Some systems use a ground-stack adapter or pole mount to couple subs with tops. Others are designed to stack directly. Check your speaker and sub compatibility - many manufacturers offer dedicated hardware to secure tops to subs for stable, aligned deployment.
