Description

The SM99 is a miniature gooseneck-mounted con-denser microphone (electret bias) designed primarily for mounting on a lectern, pulpit, or conference table. Its wide frequency response, supercardioid pickup pattern, and two-stage pop filter make it especially suitable for speech or vocal pickup. The SM99 can also be used to pick up various musical instruments. The microphone is available with three different gooseneck lengths to suit the widest variety of applications. Read more

Features

  • Smooth wide response for accurate sound reproduc-tion across the entire audio spectrum
  • Symmetrical supercardioid pattern, uniform with fre-quency out to 20 kHz, maximizes gain before feed-back, minimizes need for isolation when picking up single instruments out of a group
  • Fixed 12 dB/octave rolioff below 100 Hz to minimize pickup of low-frequency noise and vibration
  • Low distortion and wide dynamic range
  • Phantom (simplex) powered, accepts wide range of phantom voltages, from 5 to 52 Vdc
  • Low susceptibility to RFI, electrostatic and electro-magnetic hum
  • Usable over very wide range of temperature and hu-midity
  • Can be permanently mounted on lectern or podium, attached to surface-mounted standard XLR-type re-ceptacle, or stand-mounted using A25C Flex-mount or A57E swivel adapter
  • Gooseneck in SM99-12 and SM99-18 designed with rigid central length to preserve neat appearance even after repeated adjustments; flexing occurs only in sections at each end (73 mm [2-7/8 in.) at top and bot-tom)

About the Shure SM99 Condenser Condenser Gooseneck Microphone

The Shure SM99 is a high-quality, internally powered condenser microphone designed specifically for fixed installation applications where discreet, high-fidelity audio capture is required. Its defining feature is a flexible, internally damped gooseneck that allows for precise positioning of the microphone capsule, making it ideal for mounting on lecterns, conference tables, in pulpits, or on the stage floor in theatrical settings. The microphone requires a low-voltage power supply, typically provided by an external in-line power module or a compatible mixing console, which simplifies installation by eliminating the need for separate phantom power supplies. This design ensures reliable operation and delivers the detailed, wide-frequency response characteristic of condenser transducers, tailored for clear speech reproduction and critical music pickup.

The microphone capsule itself is housed in a low-profile, tapered windscreen that provides effective protection against breath pops and minor mechanical noise. Its unidirectional, cardioid polar pattern is engineered to focus on the sound source directly in front of it while providing significant rejection of ambient noise and feedback from the sides and rear. This directionality is crucial in environments like courtrooms, council chambers, and houses of worship, where multiple microphones may be used simultaneously and gain before feedback is a primary concern. The flexible gooseneck, combined with a sturdy table clamp or flush-mount base, allows the microphone to be positioned optimally—often just off to the side of a speaker's mouth—for natural, intelligible audio without being visually obtrusive.

Built for durability in permanent or semi-permanent installations, the SM99 features robust construction with materials chosen to withstand daily use. The gooseneck maintains its set position reliably, resisting sagging over time. The microphone's tailored frequency response emphasizes the vocal range for clarity while providing sufficient low-end response for full-bodied sound. For system integrators and AV technicians, the SM99 represents a professional, reliable solution for high-quality spoken word applications. It combines the sonic advantages of a condenser microphone with the practical installation benefits of a gooseneck design, delivering consistent, broadcast-quality audio that enhances communication in any formal setting.
