About the Shure WL84A Supercardioid Condenser Lavalier Microphone

The WL84A is a miniature condenser lavalier microphone capsule designed for professional wireless bodypack transmitters, excelling in applications where superior gain before feedback and off-axis rejection are critical. Its supercardioid polar pattern is more focused than a standard cardioid, providing increased rejection of ambient noise and unwanted sound sources from the sides and rear of the microphone. This characteristic makes it exceptionally well-suited for high-volume stage environments, broadcast news reporting in noisy fields, and theatrical productions where monitors and stage washes are present. The capsule is optimized to deliver clear, natural vocal reproduction with a presence rise that ensures intelligibility even when hidden under clothing.

Constructed with a ruggedized design, the WL84A features a hardened steel mesh grille that protects the sensitive condenser element from physical damage and pop noises. The internal shock mount system effectively isolates the capsule from handling noise and cable-borne vibrations, which are common challenges when the microphone is attached to a moving subject. It is equipped with a industry-standard TA4F miniature four-pin connector, ensuring direct compatibility with a wide range of professional bodypack transmitters from Shure and other manufacturers that support this connector type, offering great flexibility for system builders.

The microphone's performance is tailored for real-world use. Its supercardioid pattern allows for greater working distance from the mouth, providing more placement flexibility for costume designers while still maintaining excellent audio quality. The consistent, balanced frequency response ensures the voice sounds natural and does not become thin or boomy when hidden. Combined with its durable build and reliable connector, the WL84A is a trusted choice for sound engineers and broadcast professionals who require a discreet, high-output lavalier microphone that can deliver consistent, feedback-resistant audio in the most demanding live and recorded situations.

FAQs about Shure WL84A Supercardioid Condenser Lavalier Microphone

What is the Shure WL84A lavalier microphone best suited for?

The WL84A is an electret condenser lavalier microphone designed primarily for speech, broadcast, theater, and presentations where acoustic isolation is critical. Its supercardioid polar pattern focuses tightly on the speaker’s voice while rejecting ambient room noise and stage spill.

Why choose the supercardioid pattern of the WL84A over an omnidirectional lavalier?

The supercardioid pickup pattern provides high gain-before-feedback and superior side rejection in reverberant or high-volume sound environments. This makes it ideal for live PA situations where speakers are standing near floor monitors or main house speakers.

Does the microphone require phantom power to operate?

Yes, as an electret condenser capsule, it requires positive bias power (+5V DC typical) supplied through the connector. When paired with a wireless bodypack, the transmitter provides this operating voltage directly.

What type of connector does the WL84A use?

The attached miniature cable terminates in a female TA4F (mini 4-pin XLR) connector. This allows direct plug-and-play compatibility with all standard Shure wireless bodypack transmitters (including BLX, SLX-D, GLX-D, QLX-D, and ULX-D series).

Can I plug the WL84A into a standard XLR mixer input for wired use?

Yes, but you will need an active in-line preamplifier, such as the Shure RPM626 or RK100PK. These preamps adapt the 4-pin TA4F connector to a standard 3-pin XLR and convert standard +48V phantom power down to the bias voltage the capsule requires.

Can the capsule be swapped out for a different polar pattern?

Yes, the WL84A features interchangeable condenser cartridges that easily thread onto the capsule housing. You can replace it with the omnidirectional cartridge (WL83) or the cardioid cartridge (WL84) depending on your acoustic needs.

How do I position the WL84A for the best sound quality?

Clip the microphone to clothing around the center of the chest, roughly 6 to 8 inches (15 to 20 cm) below the chin. Because of its directional supercardioid pattern, ensure the capsule points directly toward the speaker’s mouth for consistent volume and tone.

What accessories are included or compatible with the WL84A?

It typically uses a single-tie clip or dual-mic tie clip for secure mounting, along with snap-fit foam windscreens to prevent plosive pops and breath distortion. A zippered storage pouch is also commonly included for transport and storage protection.
