What Is a Wireless Microphone System?

A wireless microphone system replaces the cable between your mic and mixer with a radio link. Every system has three core components: a microphone or input source, a transmitter that broadcasts the audio signal, and a receiver that outputs to your console or sound system.

Professional systems operate on UHF frequencies (typically 470–608 MHz in the U.S.) or in the 2.4 GHz digital band. UHF offers longer range and more channels for crowded RF environments. Digital systems are license-free and work well in smaller, controlled spaces. Systems range from single-channel setups to multi-channel rack configurations for touring and broadcast.

Have Questions?

Who uses pro wireless microphone systems?

Live sound engineers, touring productions, theater companies, houses of worship, broadcast and film crews, corporate AV teams, content creators, and fitness instructors. Applications range from vocalists on large stages to pastors at the pulpit, on-camera interviews, keynote presentations, and audio recording with cameras and mobile devices.

Do used wireless systems come with accessories?

It varies by listing. Some include antennas, rack hardware, cases, or microphone capsules; others are sold as receiver and transmitter only. Each listing specifies what's included.

What brands of wireless systems does AVGear carry?

Our wireless microphone inventory includes systems from Shure, Sennheiser, Audio-Technica, Lectrosonics, Sony, Wisycom, Electro-Voice, AKG, and other professional manufacturers. These are the same systems used on world tours, major broadcasts, Broadway stages, and top-tier productions everywhere. Inventory updates regularly.

Contact our team if you're looking for a specific model or frequency band.

What components are included in a wireless microphone system?

A complete system includes a transmitter (built into a handheld mic or a separate bodypack), a receiver with antenna(s), and the necessary cables to connect the receiver to your mixer. Some systems include the microphone capsule or lavalier; others require purchasing the mic element separately. Compact systems designed for content creators may also include a charging case for the transmitter and receiver.

What's the difference between a single-channel and dual-channel receiver?

A single-channel receiver handles one transmitter at a time. A dual-channel receiver accepts two transmitters simultaneously. This is useful for two-person interviews, backup mics, or running a handheld and lavalier on separate channels from one device. For larger productions, multi-channel rack systems scale up to dozens of channels.

How do digital wireless systems differ from analog?

Digital systems convert audio to a digital signal before transmission, offering improved signal-to-noise ratio, wider dynamic range, and more efficient use of spectrum. Audio processing happens in the digital domain, which can reduce latency and interference. Analog systems remain popular for their simplicity and proven reliability.

Do wireless microphones work with recording devices and mobile devices?

Yes. Many wireless receivers output line-level audio that connects directly to cameras, audio recorders, and interfaces. Some compact systems designed for video work include 3.5mm outputs for recording devices or adapters for mobile devices like smartphones and tablets.

How long does battery life last on wireless transmitters?

Battery life varies by system and transmitter type. Professional handhelds and bodypacks typically run 6–12 hours on AA or rechargeable batteries. Check manufacturer specs and consider systems with battery status indicators so you can monitor power during long events.

Can I add additional wireless microphones to my existing system?

Yes, as long as you have available receiver channels and can coordinate frequencies without interference. Adding additional wireless microphones requires assigning each transmitter to a separate channel. Multi-channel rack systems make scaling easier for high channel counts.

What features should I look for in a professional wireless system?

Look for frequency agility, clear RF signal indicators, reliable pairing signal between transmitter and receiver, and solid metal construction on handhelds. Useful features include mute functions, adjustable volume and gain controls, and noise cancellation or filtering for clean audio in challenging environments.
