About the Hitachi TU-Z3A Camera Control Unit

The Hitachi TU-Z3A is a professional Camera Control Unit (CCU) designed as the core processing and control hub for Hitachi's Z series of broadcast-quality studio and field cameras. Installed in a central rack within a broadcast truck or studio control room, the TU-Z3A connects to a compatible camera head via a triaxial or fiber optic cable, providing power, processing, and bidirectional communication. Its primary function is to receive the raw RGB signals from the camera's imaging sensors and perform the complex video processing necessary to produce a broadcast-standard output. This includes critical adjustments such as black level and gain setup, gamma correction, color matrixing, and detail enhancement, all of which are vital for achieving a consistent, high-quality picture that matches other cameras in a multi-camera production.

A key role of the CCU is to serve as the interface for the vision engineer or shader. Through a connected Remote Control Panel (RCP), the engineer can remotely adjust every aspect of the camera's image from the comfort of the control room, fine-tuning parameters to match lighting conditions and ensure color uniformity across all cameras on a shoot. The TU-Z3A manages this communication, sending adjustment commands to the camera head and returning status information. It also handles the embedding of intercom and tally signals into the camera cable, allowing the camera operator to communicate with the director and receive on-air cues. The unit outputs a fully processed, genlocked HD-SDI signal ready for switching, recording, or monitoring.

Built for the reliability demanded by live broadcast environments, the TU-Z3A features robust construction, often with redundant power supplies, and is designed for continuous operation. It represents the centralized intelligence of the camera chain, transforming the camera head into a remotely controllable source. This setup is essential for live sports, news, and studio productions, where camera positioning is physically demanding but image control must be precise and centralized. The TU-Z3A enables the seamless integration of high-performance cameras into a professional production workflow, ensuring technical excellence and operational flexibility.
