Microphone Types for Every Application

Wired microphones come in a range of designs, each suited to different sound sources and environments. Here's what we offer in this collection:

  • Condenser: Detailed and sensitive. Ideal for studio vocals, acoustic instruments, and overheads. Requires phantom power.
  • Tube: Warm, rich tone from vacuum tube circuitry. A studio favorite for vocals and acoustics.
  • Ribbon: Smooth high-end with a natural sound. Popular for guitar cabs, brass, and room miking.
  • Dynamic: Rugged and versatile. Handles high SPL and heavy use on stage and in the studio.
  • Handheld: Built for vocalists and presenters. Durable with low handling noise.
  • Drum: Purpose-built for kick, snare, toms, and overheads. Often sold in kits.
  • Headset & Earset: Hands-free options for theater, fitness, broadcast, and presentations.
  • Shotgun: Highly directional for film, broadcast, and field recording.
  • Lavalier: Clip-on mics for interviews, presentations, and theater. Easy to conceal.
  • Gooseneck: Flexible-neck mics for podiums, lecterns, and conference tables.
  • Boundary: Low-profile mics for conference rooms and stage floors. Mount to flat surfaces.
  • Studio & Broadcast: Large-diaphragm mics for voice-over, podcasting, and radio.

Have Questions?

What's the difference between a dynamic microphone and a condenser microphone?

A dynamic vocal microphone uses a moving coil attached to a diaphragm and does not require external power. They're rugged, handle high volume well, and are common for live vocals and loud instruments. Condenser mics use a charged capsule and require phantom power (usually 48V). They're more sensitive and capture more detail, making them popular for studio recording, overheads, and acoustic sources.

Do condenser microphones need phantom power?

Yes. Most condenser microphones require 48V phantom power, which is supplied by a mixer, audio interface, or external preamp. Tube condensers typically use a dedicated power supply. Dynamic and ribbon mics do not require phantom power—though most ribbons should not receive it, as it can damage some designs.

How do I know if a used microphone is in good condition?

Every microphone system we sell is tested at our facility. We check capsule response, connector integrity, switch function, and physical condition. Our listings include functionality and cosmetic grades so you know what to expect. If you have questions about a specific mic, contact our team for more details.

What's the best microphone for live vocals?

Dynamic handhelds like the Shure SM58 and Sennheiser e835 are industry standards for live vocal microphones. They handle the rigors of nightly use and sound good with minimal EQ. For more detail and clarity, some engineers prefer stage condensers like the Neumann KMS 105 or Shure KSM9, which offer a more open, studio-like sound but require more careful gain staging and are more sensitive to handling noise and stage volume. The right choice depends on the vocalist, the venue, and the mix.

Need help choosing? Contact our team, and we'll help you find the right fit.

Does AVGear buy used microphones?

Yes. We purchase microphones from individuals, studios, rental houses, and production companies. Submit your gear through our Sell Your Gear page for a quote, or contact us about consignment options.

Do used microphones come with original accessories?

It depends on the listing. Some mics include the original case, clip, shock mount, or windscreen; others are sold mic-only. Each listing specifies exactly what's included.

Does AVGear offer consignment for high-value microphones?

Yes. For premium or rare microphones, consignment can help you get a better return. We handle listing, marketing, and shipping while you retain ownership until the mic sells.

What condition do microphones need to be in to sell?

We consider microphones in all conditions. Fully functional mics in good cosmetic shape bring the best value, but we also buy mics with cosmetic wear or minor issues. Be upfront about the condition when submitting, and we'll factor that into our offer.
