It was a key component in the early days of direct-to-home and commercial satellite TV distribution, functioning as both a tuner to select satellite channels and a descrambler to decrypt signals protected by the VideoCipher II Plus encryption system. This system was widely used by premium cable networks and early satellite providers to control access to their content, requiring an authorized decoder like the 100C Plus for viewing.

The receiver featured a robust tuner capable of scanning the full C-band spectrum (3.7 to 4.2 GHz) via a large satellite dish.
