Dayton Audio PT2C-8 Planar Tweeter

$113.00

The PT2C-8 uses a planar magnetic design, which employs an almost weightless diaphragm made of a Kapton film membrane etched with aluminum conductors, positioned between two rows of neodymium magnets. This design provides an immediate and precise response to transient signals, resulting in exceptional clarity, detail, and lack of coloration compared to traditional dome tweeters. The large radiating area of the membrane is thermally attached to a cast aluminum plate for improved cooling and dynamic range. The tweeter features a flared waveguide that enhances the wide horizontal dispersion for an excellent off-axis response, while simultaneously limiting vertical dispersion to reduce floor and ceiling reflections.

About the Dayton Audio PT2C-8 Planar Tweeter

The Dayton Audio PT2C-8 is a high-performance planar magnetic tweeter designed for audiophile-grade loudspeaker projects and speaker upgrades. Planar magnetic drivers operate on a different principle than traditional dome tweeters: a thin, flat diaphragm with an etched conductive trace is suspended between arrays of magnets. When an audio signal passes through the trace, it interacts with the magnetic field, causing the entire diaphragm to move and produce sound. This design typically results in exceptionally fast transient response, low distortion, and a detailed, airy high-frequency presentation with wide dispersion. The PT2C-8 is engineered to extend the high-frequency range of a speaker system, often handling frequencies from around 2,000 Hz upward to beyond 20,000 Hz, making it ideal for reproducing the nuances of cymbals, string harmonics, and vocal sibilance with accuracy.

Integration into a speaker system requires careful crossover design. The tweeter's impedance and sensitivity must be matched with the woofer or midrange driver it will be paired with. The PT2C-8 features a relatively flat impedance curve, which can simplify crossover network design compared to some dynamic drivers. Its wide, rectangular radiating surface provides excellent off-axis dispersion, contributing to a spacious and stable soundstage, a characteristic highly valued in both stereo imaging and home theater applications. The driver is mounted in a sturdy frame with standard cutout dimensions, facilitating installation into custom speaker cabinets or as a replacement in existing designs.

Constructed with quality materials, the planar diaphragm is lightweight and rigid, allowing it to respond precisely to the audio signal. The magnet structure is designed to provide a strong, even magnetic field across the diaphragm. As a component from Dayton Audio's respected parts lineup, the PT2C-8 offers DIY speaker builders and modifiers access to advanced transducer technology at a accessible price point. It enables the creation of speaker systems that rival the clarity and detail of high-end commercial offerings, making it a popular choice for enthusiasts seeking to elevate the performance of their audio projects.
