About the Evertz 7707AR-8U 8 Channel AES Audio Fiber Receiver Demux

The Evertz 7707AR-8U is a modular fiber optic receiver card designed for the 7707-series backplane chassis, functioning as the complementary demultiplexer to a CWDM or multiplexed optical transmitter. Its primary role is to receive a single optical signal carrying multiple channels of multiplexed AES digital audio (or other data) over single-mode fiber, demultiplex the stream, and output eight discrete channels of unbalanced AES/EBU audio. This system is essential for long-distance, noise-immune audio distribution in broadcast facilities, linking remote production sites, or sending audio between buildings. The receiver accepts the optical input, typically at a standard CWDM wavelength like 1310nm or from a specific DWDM grid, converts it back to electrical signals, and demultiplexes the time-division-multiplexed data to recover the eight original AES channels.

Engineered for broadcast-critical reliability, the card includes a high-sensitivity optical receiver and robust clock and data recovery circuitry to ensure stable performance even with marginally weak optical signals. Each of the eight recovered AES outputs is provided on a standard BNC connector as an unbalanced 75-ohm signal (AES3id format), ready for distribution to digital audio routers, processors, or consoles. The card typically includes comprehensive status monitoring, reporting parameters such as received optical power and signal lock for each channel back to the chassis's management system via SNMP or a web interface. This allows for proactive monitoring of the fiber link's health and rapid identification of any degradation or failure.

As a module within the scalable 7700-series ecosystem, the 7707AR-8U benefits from the chassis's redundant power, centralized control, and hot-swappability. It is designed to work in tandem with a corresponding transmitter card (such as a 7707AT model) to create a complete, transparent, and high-capacity point-to-point audio over fiber link. By consolidating eight audio channels onto one fiber pair, this receiver card enables broadcast engineers to maximize their fiber infrastructure, reduce cabling complexity, and distribute pristine digital audio across vast distances without the signal degradation inherent in long copper runs.
