About the Gefen EXT-DVI-EDIDP DVI Detective Plus EDID Signal Device
The Gefen EXT-DVI-EDIDP, known as the DVI Detective Plus, is a specialized EDID management device designed to solve compatibility and handshake issues between DVI (and by extension, HDMI) sources and displays. EDID (Extended Display Identification Data) is the information a display sends to a source to communicate its supported resolutions and timings. Problems arise when this communication is interrupted, inconsistent, or when using intermediate devices like switchers or extenders that can corrupt or misrepresent the EDID data, leading to blank screens, incorrect resolutions, or unstable signals. The DVI Detective Plus acts as an intelligent intermediary, emulating a stable EDID profile to the source device while simultaneously reading and storing the actual EDID from the display, ensuring a reliable and optimal connection.
This device is particularly useful in professional AV installations, digital signage, and complex home theater systems. It features a compact, in-line design that connects between the source and the display (or distribution system). Users can program the device with a specific EDID profile using dip switches or by learning the EDID directly from a connected display. Once programmed, it presents this consistent EDID to the source, "tricking" it into outputting the desired resolution and refresh rate consistently, regardless of downstream display changes or power cycles. This prevents the source from reverting to a default, often lower, resolution when a display is turned off or when switching between multiple displays.
The DVI Detective Plus is a passive device, requiring no external power, which simplifies installation. Its robust construction ensures reliability in permanent installations. By providing precise control over the EDID handshake, this tool empowers system integrators to eliminate one of the most common and frustrating issues in digital AV systems, ensuring that sources and displays communicate effectively for stable, high-quality video output every time.
