About the Gidel RCLF Remote Camera Link Over Fiber-Optic

The Gidel RCLF (Remote Camera Link Fiber-Optic) system represents a significant technological solution for machine vision and industrial imaging applications that require high-speed data transmission over considerable distances. It is specifically engineered to overcome the inherent distance limitations and electromagnetic interference (EMI) susceptibility of traditional copper Camera Link cabling, which typically only reliably transmits signals over much shorter distances, often merely a few meters. By converting electrical Camera Link signals into light pulses for transmission over rugged fiber optic cables, the RCLF ensures reliable, lossless signal integrity in challenging industrial environments, such as factory floors with heavy machinery that produce substantial electrical noise. The system effectively bridges the gap between remote cameras (up to 40 km away) and the host computer's frame grabber, all without the need for signal repeaters.

The primary function of the Gidel RCLF is to facilitate seamless, real-time image acquisition from a remote location. A typical configuration involves a camera unit directly connecting to a local RCLF module, which then uses a single duplex fiber optic cable to link to a receiving unit in the host PC. This receiving unit can be either a dedicated Gidel HawkEye-CL frame grabber board, which offers on-board real-time image processing capabilities, or a separate Gidel RCLGR module that allows connection to any third-party frame grabber, providing flexibility in system design. Furthermore, the system is robust in its support for the entire spectrum of Camera Link modes, including the demanding 80-bit DECA configuration, and even allows for the connection of two separate Base mode cameras simultaneously.

Beyond simply extending the video signal, the RCLF system is a comprehensive remote control interface. It transmits not just image data but also essential control and communication signals over the same fiber optic link, which is a major advantage for system management. This includes standard Camera Link camera control lines, serial communication channels (RS232), and a dedicated General Purpose Input/Output (GPIO) interface with opto-coupler drivers and receivers, supporting a wide 3-30V range. This allows the host PC to remotely control camera parameters, trigger acquisitions, and interact with other peripheral equipment, consolidating control and simplifying complex setups over immense distances.
