JLCooper Electronics Rackshot Hardware v1.1.1

$0.00 -

RackShot provides the exact same control capabilities as our KeyShot in a convenient single space, 19″ rack mount package. It connects via Compact RS-232, RS-422, USB or Ethernet to provide instant audio or video clip playback triggering in broadcast automation, post and other professional applications where relegendable push-button switches in a rack are useful. It features 10 remotely relegendable, multi-color, backlit liquid crystal display (LCD) push-button switches. The LCDs can display 36 x 24 pixel bitmaps or 3 lines of text (6 characters per line), or a combination of text, graphic symbols or animation. They can alert users to changing operating conditions by showing any of 8 different colors. This enables a customized user interface that changes to suit the task at hand and helps users work faster and with fewer mistakes. Other controls include 13 lighted function keys and a rotary encoder. The RackShot is capable of accepting Compact Ethernet, USB, RS-232 or RS-422 Interface Cards. It provides instant audio or video playback triggering in broadcast, post and other professional applications where relegendable push-button switches in a rack are useful.

About the JLCooper Electronics Rackshot Hardware v1.1.1

The JLCooper Electronics Rackshot is a specialized hardware controller designed for professional video editing and color grading workstations, specifically engineered to provide tactile, hands-on control for Avid Media Composer editing systems. Version 1.1.1 represents a specific firmware or hardware iteration of this rack-mountable control surface. It translates the nuanced, repetitive tasks of nonlinear editing—such as timeline navigation, clip trimming, and application of effects—into a physical interface of buttons, knobs, and transport controls, thereby streamlining workflow and increasing editor efficiency. The unit is designed to integrate seamlessly with Avid's software, emulating keyboard shortcuts and mouse commands while providing dedicated controls for functions like JKL shuttle, dynamic trimming, and source/record editing, which are central to the Avid editing methodology.

The hardware is built around a robust, metal 1U rackmount chassis, making it suitable for installation in post-production suites and broadcast edit bays where equipment is standardized in 19-inch racks. Its front panel features an array of backlit buttons with a logical layout that mirrors the conceptual workflow of Media Composer, including a central shuttle knob for precise variable-speed scrubbing through footage. The tactile feedback and muscle memory developed from using dedicated physical controls can significantly speed up the editing process compared to relying solely on a keyboard and mouse, especially for complex sequences and fast-turnaround projects. The Rackshot is known for its plug-and-play simplicity, connecting to the host computer via a standard USB interface and requiring specific driver software to map its controls directly to Avid's command set.

The value of the Rackshot lies in its focused, application-specific design. Rather than being a generic MIDI controller, it is purpose-built to speak the native language of Avid Media Composer, offering editors a reliable and responsive extension of their creative intent. By offloading frequent commands to dedicated buttons and knobs, it reduces on-screen menu diving and allows editors to maintain focus on the visual timeline. The JLCooper Rackshot, particularly in its v1.1.1 configuration, represents a period-specific tool that enhanced the physicality and speed of the editing process for professionals committed to the Avid ecosystem, embodying the principle of optimizing hardware to serve specialized software workflows.
