Description

The JLCooper MLA-XLR MIDI Line Amplifier is a professional MIDI signal extender designed to transmit MIDI data reliably over long distances using standard balanced XLR microphone cables. Engineered for recording studios, theaters, broadcast facilities, houses of worship, touring productions, and live entertainment venues, the MLA-XLR converts MIDI signals to balanced RS-422 transmission, allowing cable runs of over 1,000 feet with minimal signal degradation and virtually no latency. Featuring a compact quarter-rack enclosure with simple plug-and-play operation, the unit requires no configuration and integrates seamlessly into existing MIDI systems. The MLA-XLR is ideal for installations where conventional MIDI cable length limitations must be overcome while maintaining dependable, noise-resistant communication between MIDI devices. Read more

About the JLCooper MLA-XLR MIDI Line Amplifier

The JLCooper MLA-XLR is a single-channel, bi-directional MIDI line amplifier designed to extend the reliable transmission range of MIDI data over massive distances. Professional touring productions and permanent venue installations frequently rely on this specific device to route show-critical MIDI signals from a front-of-house (FOH) console to the stage using standard, pre-installed balanced audio lines, such as 3-pin XLR microphone cables or analog audio snakes.

Because the official MIDI protocol dictates an unbalanced transmission method that becomes highly unreliable and prone to dropped data packets after approximately 50 feet, the MLA-XLR intercepts standard MIDI data and converts it into a robust, balanced differential signal (utilizing the RS-422 specification). This active conversion shields the data stream from electrical interference and signal degradation, guaranteeing zero-latency, error-free transmission for cable runs exceeding 1,000 feet. However, because the signal sent down the XLR cable is no longer standard MIDI, you must deploy these units in pairs—one at the transmitting source to encode the signal, and another at the receiving destination to decode it back into a standard 5-pin MIDI connection.
