About the Meyer Sound LD-3 Air Attenuation Compensating Line Driver
The Meyer Sound LD-3 is a specialized, high-performance line driver designed to compensate for high-frequency signal loss (air attenuation) that occurs over long cable runs in distributed loudspeaker systems. In large-scale installations such as stadiums, airports, houses of worship, and theatrical venues, audio signals must travel hundreds of feet from the central processing rack to remote loudspeaker clusters. As cable length increases, the inherent capacitance of the cable acts as a low-pass filter, progressively rolling off high frequencies and resulting in a dull, muffled sound at the speaker locations. The LD-3 actively counteracts this effect by applying a precise, frequency-selective gain boost to the signal before it enters the long cable, pre-equalizing it so that it arrives at the remote loudspeaker processor with a flat, uncompromised frequency response.
This device is far more sophisticated than a simple graphic equalizer. It provides three independently adjustable bands of parametric equalization (low, mid, and high), each with controls for frequency, bandwidth (Q), and up to ±15 dB of boost or cut. A dedicated "Air Attenuation" circuit is its hallmark feature, offering a shelving-style high-frequency boost that is specifically tailored to compensate for cable losses. Engineers can calculate the required compensation based on the exact cable type and length, then dial in the correction on the LD-3 to ensure signal integrity. The unit also offers extremely high headroom and very low noise, critical for maintaining dynamic range in professional systems, and includes ground lift switches and balanced inputs/outputs to prevent ground loop hum.
Housed in a single rack unit, the LD-3 is a fundamental tool in the Meyer Sound design philosophy of delivering consistent, predictable sound quality at every listening position, regardless of system scale. It is typically used in the signal chain between the system processor (like a Galileo) and the power amplifiers driving remote zones. By ensuring that the full spectral content of the audio program reaches the distant loudspeaker processors without degradation, the LD-3 allows those processors to apply only the speaker-specific tuning and room correction, preserving the clarity, detail, and brilliance of the source material across vast distances. It is an essential component for any large, distributed audio system where cable runs exceed standard lengths.
