About the MOTU 828 Firewire Audio Interface

The MOTU (Mark of the Unicorn) 828 is a historic piece of studio equipment, widely recognized as the world's first FireWire-based audio interface for Mac and PC. Released in 2001, it fundamentally revolutionized home and mobile recording by eliminating the need for bulky, desktop-bound internal PCI cards. Instead, it allowed audio engineers and musicians to pipe 18 inputs and 18 outputs of high-quality digital audio directly into a laptop or desktop computer using a single IEEE 1394 FireWire cable.

Housed in a rugged 1U rackmountable chassis, the original 828 handles 24-bit audio at up to 48kHz. The analog stage features eight inputs—including two front-panel Neutrik combo jacks with dedicated microphone preamps and 48V phantom power—along with eight TRS line outputs. For digital expansion, it heavily utilizes the ADAT optical standard, providing eight channels of digital I/O alongside stereo S/PDIF. This made it incredibly popular for tracking full bands, as users could easily chain an 8-channel ADAT microphone preamp to the 828 to capture 10 microphones simultaneously. It also introduced MOTU's hardware-based CueMix Plus technology, providing latency-free monitoring for performers.
