RME ADI648 64 Channel, 24-Bit/96kHz MADI / ADAT Format Converter with 16 x 16 Routing Matrix

$0.00

The RME ADI-648 is a professional-grade format converter that seamlessly bridges the MADI and ADAT digital audio protocols. This 1U, 19-inch rackmount device is capable of handling 64 channels of 24-bit audio at sample rates up to 96 kHz, offering bidirectional conversion between the two formats. MADI offers robust, long-distance transmission over a single coaxial (BNC) or fiber optic cable, while ADAT utilizes TOSLINK connections for shorter distances. The ADI-648 includes a user-configurable 16x16 matrix router that allows for flexible and extensive routing, splitting, and merging of audio channels. Equipped with RME's SteadyClock technology, it provides high-precision clocking from the MADI signal itself, eliminating the need for an external word clock for many applications. With its array of features, the ADI-648 is an essential utility for integrating MADI-based equipment with ADAT-equipped devices in professional studios, live sound, and broadcast environments.

About the RME ADI648 64 Channel, 24-Bit/96kHz MADI / ADAT Format Converter with 16 x 16 Routing Matrix

The RME ADI648 is a high-channel-count digital audio format converter and router designed to bridge MADI (Multichannel Audio Digital Interface) and ADAT optical protocols within professional studio and broadcast environments. Its primary function is to convert the 64 channels of a single MADI stream (at 48kHz or 96kHz) into eight ADAT optical outputs (each carrying 8 channels), and vice versa, allowing seamless integration of equipment like multi-channel preamps, digital mixers, and outboard gear that use different digital standards. This enables system expansion and signal distribution where MADI serves as the high-density backbone and ADAT provides connectivity to a wide range of peripheral devices. The unit supports sample rates up to 24-bit/96kHz, ensuring high-fidelity signal conversion across all channels.

Central to the ADI648's flexibility is its built-in 16 x 16 routing matrix. This allows any of the 16 MADI channels (within the 64-channel stream) or any of the 16 ADAT channels (across two ADAT ports) to be flexibly mapped to any output, providing essential patchbay-like functionality within the digital domain. This routing capability simplifies system setup by eliminating the need for physical repatching to change signal flow. The unit also includes sample rate converters on all inputs, which can be individually enabled to handle clock mismatches between connected devices, ensuring glitch-free operation in complex digital audio networks where multiple clock sources may be present.

Housed in a compact 1U rackmount chassis, the ADI648 is built with RME's hallmark attention to audio quality and reliability. It features both optical and coaxial MADI interfaces for maximum connectivity options, along with word clock I/O for system synchronization. Control is intuitive via front-panel buttons and an LCD display, with deeper configuration available through MIDI or dedicated software. By combining transparent format conversion, intelligent sample rate conversion, and flexible routing in a single unit, the RME ADI648 serves as a critical infrastructure component, enabling scalable and interoperable digital audio systems in recording studios, post-production facilities, and live broadcast setups.
