About the Clay Paky Sharpy Moving Light

The Clay Paky Sharpy is a compact, high-intensity moving beam light that has become an iconic fixture in concert touring, television production, and large-scale stage events due to its extraordinary brightness and razor-sharp beam. At its core is an extremely powerful 189-watt Osram HTI lamp, which, combined with a highly efficient optical system, produces an intense, nearly parallel beam with an exceptionally narrow beam angle, often as tight as 0.65 degrees. This results in a piercing shaft of light with remarkable throw distance, capable of cutting through the strongest ambient stage lighting and remaining vividly visible even in daylight rehearsals or outdoor festivals. Its defining characteristic is the sheer intensity and precision of its beam, making it ideal for creating dramatic aerial effects, long-throw audience scanning, and crisp gobo projections.

Despite its compact and lightweight aluminum housing, the Sharpy delivers performance rivaling much larger fixtures. It features a comprehensive effects package including a rotating gobo wheel with both glass and metal patterns, a fixed gobo wheel, a variable-speed strobe, and an adjustable frost filter to diffuse the hard beam into a soft wash when needed. The moving head provides fast, precise 16-bit pan and tilt movement with a wide range, enabling rapid snaps and smooth sweeps that bring the intense beam to life with kinetic energy. The fixture's relatively small size and low weight allow for high-density rigging, meaning many units can be deployed to create complex, synchronized beam arrays that are a staple of modern large-format show lighting.

Control is achieved via standard DMX512 protocol, offering multiple channel modes to suit different programming needs. The Sharpy is designed for reliability in demanding touring conditions, with effective thermal management to handle the heat output of its powerful lamp. Its combination of raw optical power, speed, effects versatility, and compact form factor revolutionized the expectations for beam moving lights, setting a new benchmark for intensity in a small package. The Clay Paky Sharpy remains a go-to fixture for lighting designers who need to create bold, high-impact visual statements with precision and power.
