Description

The KSM353/ED from Shure is a superior ribbon microphone designed for high-quality reproduction in the studio or concert hall. The mic is hand-assembled in the United States, and features the build quality that Shure mics are renowned for. Shure outfitted the KSM353/ED with its proprietary Roswellite ribbon material, which has more strength and resilience than a conventional foil ribbon. The mic is also equipped with a custom ribbon-motor assembly, which helps tailor bass response and improve presence. A custom-wound double-shielded, full-size transformer keeps signal loss at a minimum and increases output. The KSM353/ED's bi-directional polar pattern delivers totally symmetrical audio and superior off-axis rejection. Shure recommends using mic preamps with impedances of at least 1 kOhm to get optimal low-end and midrange performance. The mic offers a low noise floor, and an output level that's on par with moving-coil microphones. Read more

About the Shure KSM353/ED Bi‑Directional Ribbon Microphone (Roswellite®, hand‑assembled, shock mount, case included)

The Shure KSM353/ED is a premium bi-directional (figure-8) ribbon microphone that combines the warm, natural sonic signature of classic ribbon technology with modern durability and high-output performance. This microphone features a hand-tuned, ultra-thin aluminum ribbon suspended within a precision magnetic structure, capturing sound with exceptional transient response and a smooth, detailed frequency response. Its bi-directional polar pattern picks up sound equally from the front and rear of the microphone while rejecting sound from the sides, making it an exquisite tool for capturing two sound sources simultaneously, employing Blumlein stereo recording techniques, or creatively using ambient room reflections. The microphone's output is significantly higher than that of vintage ribbon designs, providing a strong, clean signal with low self-noise that works well with a wide range of preamplifiers.

Built to defy the traditional fragility associated with ribbon microphones, the KSM353/ED incorporates robust internal protection against accidental phantom power engagement and features a sophisticated shock mount system to minimize handling and mechanical noise. Its sleek, satin nickel finish and durable construction reflect its professional studio pedigree. The microphone delivers a characteristically smooth high-end roll-off without harshness and a rich low-end response, making it exceptionally flattering on brass instruments, string sections, guitar cabinets, and as a room microphone for drums or ensemble recording.

The Shure KSM353/ED is engineered for the critical-listening recording engineer and discerning musician who seeks the authentic, musical tone of a ribbon transducer without operational limitations. It provides the versatility of a figure-8 pattern for advanced stereo miking and acoustic manipulation, coupled with the reliability needed for daily professional use. This microphone captures sources with a natural, uncolored musicality that has become the hallmark of high-end ribbon microphone technology.
