Shure RPM181/O Omnidirectional Polar Pattern Capsule

$317.00

The RPM181/O Omnidirectional Polar Pattern Capsule by Shure is one of four interchangeable capsules for Shure's Beta 181 side-address instrument microphone. It features a locking ring which provides a secure connection with the Shure RPM181/PRE. Paired with this preamp, its compact design weighs only 5.1 oz and gets close to any source even in the tightest conditions. With its wide frequency response and high SPL handling, it's great for capturing room ambience, string ensembles and used as a mono drum overhead. It also performs with little to no crossover distortion and provides exceptional low-frequency reproduction.

The capsule is made with a hardened steel mesh grille that resists denting, wear and abuse. Along with its compact form factor, the diaphragm provides exceptional audio with consistent, textbook-like polar responses resulting in a mic with noteworthy sound and versatility.

About the Shure RPM181/O Omnidirectional Polar Pattern Capsule

The Shure RPM181/O is a modular omnidirectional polar pattern capsule designed for integration with compatible modular microphone systems. It houses a large-diaphragm true condenser transducer engineered to capture sound equally from all directions, providing a natural, open, and spacious sonic character. This polar pattern is ideal for applications where capturing the full ambience of a room or the natural tonal balance of an instrument is desired, such as in stereo recording techniques, room miking, ensemble recording, or for capturing the sound of a source in a highly controlled acoustic environment without the proximity effect associated with directional microphones. The capsule attaches securely to a compatible modular microphone body, transforming it into a high-quality omnidirectional condenser microphone.

The sonic signature of the RPM181/O is characterized by exceptional low-frequency response, a flat and uncolored tonal balance, and a very low noise floor. Because it is omnidirectional, it does not exhibit the low-end boost that occurs when directional microphones are used very close to a sound source, making it an excellent choice for close-miking instruments where a natural bass response is critical. Its design and construction mirror the precision of other capsules in the RPM series, with high-grade materials ensuring consistent performance and reliability. This modular approach offers studios and sound engineers tremendous flexibility, allowing a single microphone base to serve multiple acoustic roles through simple capsule interchange.

Typical applications for the RPM181/O include use as a spot microphone on acoustic piano, string sections, or classical guitar, as one of a pair for spaced omnidirectional stereo recording, or as a room microphone to capture natural reverberation. When paired with a high-quality system base, it performs as a top-tier studio microphone, providing the transparent, uncolored, and natural sound reproduction required for the most critical recording tasks. The RPM181/O exemplifies the utility of a modular system, enabling audio professionals to select the perfect polar pattern for each unique recording challenge.
