Shure RPM181/BI Bidirectional Polar Pattern Capsule

$317.00

The RPM181/BI Bidirectional Polar Pattern Capsule by Shure is one of four interchangeable capsules for Shure's Beta 181 side-address instrument microphone. It features a locking ring which provides a secure connection with the Shure RPM181/PRE. Paired with this preamp, its compact design weighs only 5.1 oz and gets close to any source even in the tightest conditions. With its wide frequency response and high SPL handling, it's great for miking dual sound sources such as between toms or acoustic instruments. It can also be very useful as a mono drum overhead or use a pair to create the Blumlein stereo effect. It also performs with little to no crossover distortion and provides exceptional low-frequency reproduction.

The capsule is made with a hardened steel mesh grille that resists denting, wear and abuse. Along with its compact form factor, the diaphragm provides exceptional audio with consistent, textbook-like polar responses resulting in a mic with noteworthy sound and versatility.

About the Shure RPM181/BI Bidirectional Polar Pattern Capsule

The Shure RPM181/BI is a specialized modular bidirectional (figure-8) polar pattern capsule designed for integration with compatible modular microphone systems. It is engineered to transform a compatible microphone base into a high-quality bidirectional condenser microphone, a pattern that is essential for sophisticated stereo recording techniques and specific studio applications. The bidirectional pattern captures sound equally from the front and rear of the microphone while rejecting sound from the sides. This makes it invaluable for techniques like Blumlein Pair stereo recording and for isolating two sound sources facing each other, such as in a duet or interview setting, while minimizing room ambience and noise from the sides.

Constructed with a large-diaphragm true condenser transducer, the RPM181/BI delivers the smooth, detailed sound quality associated with premium studio microphones. Its frequency response is tailored to provide natural and accurate reproduction, making it suitable for capturing vocals, acoustic instruments, and ambient sound with fidelity. The capsule attaches securely to a compatible modular microphone body via a proprietary locking mechanism, ensuring a reliable electrical and mechanical connection. This modular approach offers studios and audio professionals significant flexibility, allowing them to switch polar patterns quickly by changing capsules rather than investing in multiple dedicated microphones.

The RPM181/BI is a tool for the discerning audio engineer seeking the unique spatial and isolation properties of a bidirectional pattern. It excels in applications where controlled ambient pickup or precise two-source isolation is required, such as in voiceover booths, acoustic music recording, and broadcast. When paired with a high-quality system base, it performs as a top-tier bidirectional microphone, providing the versatility and sonic excellence needed for professional audio production. This capsule underscores the value of a modular ecosystem, enabling sophisticated microphone techniques with a single, adaptable system.
