About the SHURE SM7DB Dynamic Vocal Microphone With Built-in Preamp

The Shure SM7DB is a professional dynamic vocal microphone that builds upon the legendary SM7B platform by integrating an advanced, switchable onboard preamplifier. This internal preamp provides a significant gain boost, addressing the classic requirement for substantial clean gain that the passive SM7B demands from an external audio interface or mixer. This integrated solution allows the microphone to deliver its full, rich sound character when connected directly to a wider range of audio interfaces, recorders, or mixers that may not have sufficient preamplification on their own. It retains all the sonic characteristics of the SM7B, including a smooth, flat, wide-range frequency response and effective electromagnetic hum rejection.

The microphone features the same versatile onboard controls as the SM7B, including a bass roll-off switch and a presence boost switch, allowing vocalists, podcasters, and broadcasters to tailor the tone directly at the source. The internal preamp itself is selectable, offering multiple gain stages to match different source levels and input sensitivities. The iconic design includes a large, built-in windscreen (pop filter) and an internal air suspension shock mount that isolates the capsule from mechanical noise. Its cardioid polar pattern provides excellent rejection of ambient room sound and background noise.

The SM7DB simplifies the signal chain for content creators by reducing dependency on ultra-high-gain external preamps. It combines the broadcast-proven sonic performance of the SM7B with the convenience and flexibility of built-in amplification, making it an even more accessible and powerful tool for professional studio recording, podcasting, streaming, and voice-over work.
