About the Startech Gigabit Ethernet over Coaxial Unmanaged Network Extender EOC1110K
The Startech EOC1110K is an unmanaged network extender that enables Gigabit Ethernet data transmission over existing coaxial cabling, such as RG-6 or RG-59. This device pair (comprising a transmitter and a receiver) is designed to bridge network connectivity between two points where running new Ethernet cable is impractical or costly, leveraging the installed base of coaxial infrastructure commonly found in residential, commercial, and industrial buildings. The extender uses advanced modulation technology to convert the Ethernet signal for transmission over coaxial cable, providing a reliable and high-speed network link at distances significantly greater than traditional Ethernet's 100-meter limit over Cat5e/6. This makes it an ideal solution for extending network access to remote security cameras, access points, set-top boxes, or office workstations.
Operation is plug-and-play, requiring no configuration or management software. The transmitter unit connects to a standard Gigabit Ethernet switch or router via an RJ-45 port and to the coaxial cable via an F-type connector. The receiver unit, placed at the remote location, reverses the process, providing a standard RJ-45 Ethernet port for connecting the end device. The extender supports full-duplex Gigabit Ethernet speeds, ensuring that bandwidth-intensive applications perform well. It also supports Power over Ethernet (PoE) pass-through, meaning that if the source switch provides PoE, the extender can carry that power over the coaxial link to power a PoE device like a wireless access point or IP camera at the remote end, simplifying power delivery.
The EOC1110K is housed in compact, durable enclosures suitable for desktop mounting or installation in electrical boxes. Its design focuses on reliability and ease of deployment in retrofit scenarios, such as updating an older building's CCTV system to IP cameras without rewiring. By utilizing ubiquitous coaxial cabling, this network extender provides a cost-effective and efficient method to expand network infrastructure, extend wireless coverage, or deploy IoT devices, making it a valuable tool for network installers, IT professionals, and system integrators.
