Description

The TASCAM SERIES 208i is a professional-quality, mid-grade audio/MIDI interface featuring internal and bundled effects processing, internal mixing, and external software control, well suited for studio, home, and live recording. The 208i sports a four classic TASCAM Ultra-HDDA (High Definition Discrete Amplifier) microphone preamps, which ensure a natural, transparent tone with low noise. The recording and playback engine deliver high-definition 24-bit / 192 kHz resolution and solid stability. The front panel offers four combo XLR-1/4" inputs which are switchable between instrument (Hi-Z) and mic/line selections, as well as independent +48V phantom power, as well as dual headphone outputs. The rear panel offers eight balanced, 1/4" line outputs, which enable multiple monitor mixes or up to 7.1 surround monitoring, a set of 5-pin DIN MIDI inputs and outputs, and a USB 2.0 Type-B computer connector. If two inputs aren't enough, the SERIES 208i offers two S/MUX optical (ADAT) inputs, which provide an additional 16 channels of expansion. Additionally, the BNC word clock in and out ensures correct synchronization with other digital audio devices. Read more

FAQs about TASCAM SERIES 208i USB Audio/MIDI Interface

How many total inputs and outputs does the Tascam SERIES 208i provide?

The interface features 20 total inputs and 8 total outputs. On the physical chassis, it provides 8 analog XLR/TRS combo inputs and 8 balanced TRS line outputs. The remaining 12 digital inputs are accessed via dual optical expansion ports using ADAT or S/PDIF protocols.

What driver software is required to use the interface with Windows or Mac computers?

You need to download and install the official Tascam SERIES Software and Driver package. On macOS, the unit is Class-Compliant (CoreAudio), while on Windows, it uses custom low-latency ASIO drivers. The companion software also provides an internal digital routing mixer and DSP control interface.

Does the Tascam SERIES 208i work with iPad and iOS devices?

Yes. The interface supports standalone iOS mode. To connect to an iPad or iPhone, you need an Apple Lightning-to-USB Camera Adapter (or a standard USB-C to USB-C cable for USB-C iPads) along with the interface's included AC power adapter connected to mains power.

How do the optical digital inputs expand the input channel count?

The dual S/MUX optical ports allow you to connect external multi-channel mic preamps (like a Tascam SERIES 8p Dyne or similar ADAT units). At $44.1/48\text{ kHz}$ sample rates, both optical ports together provide up to 12 additional digital audio channels.

Can the Tascam SERIES 208i be used as a standalone microphone preamp without a computer?

Yes. You can configure and save internal mixer routings via the Tascam Control software while connected to a PC/Mac. Once saved, the SERIES 208i retains these DSP settings and operates in Standalone Mode as an independent 8-channel mic preamp and mixer unit when powered on without a computer connected.

What onboard DSP effects and processing features are available?

The built-in DSP chip handles zero-latency monitoring, input processing, and mixing directly on the hardware. Each channel includes a 4-band equalizer, a compressor, phase reverse, and a global studio-quality reverb module that can be assigned to monitor sends.

How do the dual headphone outputs on the front panel work?

The front panel features two independent $1/4$-inch headphone output jacks with individual volume controls. Through the Tascam Control Software, you can route separate custom headphone mixes (such as distinct performer vs. engineer mixes) to each jack using the internal routing bus.

Why is phantom power (+48V) not turning on for a specific microphone input?

Phantom power on the SERIES 208i is controlled in banks of 4 channels (+48V) switches for inputs 1–4 and inputs 5–8). Ensure the physical toggle switch for the corresponding input bank on the front panel is switched on, and verify you are using a balanced 3-pin XLR cable (phantom power does not supply through 1/4-inch TRS instrument inputs).

How do the MIDI In and Out ports function on the rear panel?

The 5-pin DIN MIDI ports act as a standard USB-MIDI interface for your DAW. Connecting vintage synthesizers, drum machines, or MIDI controllers directly to these ports passes MIDI note and clock data to and from your recording software over the single USB connection.
