The TeleCast Fiber Adder 322 is a specialized multiplexer unit designed for high-density, long-distance signal transmission in broadcast and live production environments. Its primary function is to aggregate multiple types of signals—including multiple channels of audio, intercom data, and serial control data (RS-422/RS-232)—and combine them onto a single optical fiber strand. This process, known as multiplexing, allows for the clean, lossless, and immune-to-interference transport of numerous critical signals between a production truck and a venue, or between different control rooms and equipment areas, over distances of several kilometers.

The "Adder" in its name reflects its role in a modular fiber system; multiple Adder 322 units can be combined to build a custom signal complement. A typical setup involves using these units at both the transmit and receive ends of a fiber link. At the transmission point, various source signals are connected and multiplexed onto the fiber. At the receive point, a complementary demultiplexer unit separates the combined signal back into discrete audio, data, and intercom streams for local distribution. This dramatically simplifies cabling infrastructure compared to running individual copper cables for each signal type over long distances.
