About the Tokina Cinema ATX 11-16mm T3.0 PL Mount Lens
The Tokina Cinema ATX 11-16mm T3.0 is a compact, lightweight PL mount ultra-wide zoom lens engineered specifically for cinematographers using Super 35mm and APS-C format digital cinema cameras. Unlike a simple rehousing of the acclaimed still photography version, Tokina re-engineered the optical system to provide the mechanical precision and optical performance professionals demand in cinema glass, including reduced focus breathing, parfocal zoom performance, and sharp 4K resolution throughout the zoom range. The lens covers a versatile wide-angle focal range of 11mm to 16mm, with a zoom ratio of 1.45:1 and a horizontal angle of view spanning 104 to 84 degrees on Super 35 sensors.
Built for the rigors of professional production, the lens features a durable all-metal cinema housing with standard 0.8 module (32 pitch) geared rings for focus, aperture, and zoom, allowing seamless integration with follow focus systems and remote lens control devices. The PL mount variant offers an extended 166-degree focus rotation throw, providing precise focus control critical for pulling focus in demanding shooting scenarios. The de-clicked aperture ring with nine curved iris blades enables smooth, stepless iris pulls and creates pleasing, rounded bokeh wide open.
Optically, the lens incorporates two Super-Low Dispersion (SD) glass elements and two aspherical lens elements to achieve excellent contrast, sharpness, and color fidelity while minimizing chromatic aberration, flare, and ghosting. The multi-layer coating further enhances contrast and reduces unwanted reflections. The minimum focus distance is 0.35 meters (approximately 13.8 inches), with a maximum macro magnification ratio of 1:11.6. The lens accepts 82mm screw-in filters and includes a bayonet-mount petal-type lens hood with click-lock retention. Weighing approximately 680 grams (1.5 pounds) and measuring just over 100mm in length, the Tokina Cinema 11-16mm T3.0 offers an exceptional combination of ultra-wide angle coverage, professional features, and portability, making it ideal for documentary, independent film, and broadcast production.
