A 650nm Visual Fault Locator (VFL) is a compact, pen-style diagnostic tool used by telecommunications technicians to instantly identify physical damage, breaks, sharp bends, and faulty splices within fiber-optic cables.

Excimer lasers are large, highly complex devices that produce invisible ultraviolet light (typically used in procedures like LASIK eye surgery and semiconductor manufacturing). In contrast, a VFL specifically uses a 650nm visible red laser diode because it falls directly within the human eye's visible spectrum, allowing the operator to literally see where light is escaping from a broken fiber.

Because optical fibers carry data using invisible infrared light, a technician cannot simply look at a cable to see if it is broken. The VFL solves this by injecting an intense beam of visible red light directly into the fiber core. If there is a fracture, severe micro-bend, or dirty connector, the red light escapes the core and powerfully illuminates the outer cable jacket at the exact point of the fault, allowing for rapid field repairs.
