Description

White Instruments-4700 1/3 Octave Equalizer. The 4700 and two channel version, 4700-2, are digitally controlled, R-C active, 28 band, one-third octave graphic equalizers with adjustable high and low-pass filters and 10 memory presets. They are constructed with a full front panel to control every aspect of the equalizer's operation. Factory installed remote control, network and back lighted LCD display options are available. A bypass switch on the rear panel performs a hardwire bypass of the equalizer by connecting the input(s) to the output(s). A mute relay mutes the output(s) on power-up/down to protect the sound system. The servo-balanced input(s) and output(s) (terminal Strip connections) can be operated, unbalanced, without a change in level or dynamic range. Level(s) are adjusted in 0.5dB steps. Read more

Features

  • Can be equipped with either a crossover network card or a pink noise generator card
  • Band limiting filters are adjusted with the built-in software, each in 8 steps, over a range of 10Hz through 160Hz for the high-pass filter and 32kHz through 6kHz for the low-pass filter. The response is 12dB/octave.

About the White Instruments 4700 1/3 Octave Equalizer (UNTESTED)

The Wholehog White Instruments 4700 stands as a quintessential piece of professional audio processing gear, renowned for its precision and durability in permanent sound installations. Engineered during an era when dedicated hardware equalizers were the cornerstone of system tuning, this 1/3-octave graphic equalizer was built to offer system engineers an unparalleled level of control over room acoustics and speaker system anomalies. Its design philosophy prioritizes sonic transparency and operational reliability, making it a trusted choice for critical environments where consistent, uncolored performance is non-negotiable.

This unit distinguishes itself through its use of 27 high-quality slide potentiometers, each corresponding to an ISO-standard center frequency spanning the full audible spectrum from 20 Hz to 20 kHz. The asynchronous filter design ensures minimal interaction between adjacent bands, allowing for precise corrective adjustments without unintended tonal side effects. The robust 2U rack-mount chassis and professional balanced connectivity reflect its intended use in demanding fixed installations, from performing arts centers and broadcast facilities to high-end houses of worship.

The legacy of the 4700 is defined by its straightforward, purpose-built approach to system equalization. It provides a tactile, intuitive interface for technicians to shape system response, devoid of the digital menus or presets found in modern processors. As such, it represents a specific era of audio engineering where dedicated analog hardware provided the final, critical link in the signal chain, valued for its immediate hands-on control and proven long-term stability in the field.
