How Commercial Projectors Work

Commercial projectors are devices used to project images or videos onto large screens in professional settings. They work by using a light source (such as a lamp or laser light source) that passes through an imaging system, like LCD or DLP, to create the image. The light is then focused through a lens and projected onto the screen. These projectors are designed to offer high resolution and bright, clear visuals, making them ideal for large spaces and presentations. Many also feature built-in speakers and adjustable settings for optimal image quality.

Have Questions?

Does AVGear test pre-owned projectors before selling them?

Yes. Every projector goes through inspection and testing at our 30,000 square-foot Las Vegas facility. Our technicians verify functionality, check lamp or laser hours, inspect lenses, and perform any necessary maintenance before equipment is listed for sale. We assign both a functionality rating (F1–F5) and a cosmetic rating (C1–C5) so you know exactly what you're getting.

What brands of projectors does AVGear carry?

Our inventory includes projectors from leading professional manufacturers such as Barco, Christie, Panasonic, Sony, Epson, NEC, Hitachi, Optoma, Sanyo, and Digital Projection.

We're always getting new inventory, so check back often or contact our team if you're looking for something specific.

Can AVGear help me sell my used projectors?

Absolutely. We offer multiple options for selling your gear, including consignment programs, full buyouts, and auction services. Our team handles everything from valuation and pickup to remarketing and sales.

Visit our Sell Your Gear page to get started.

Does AVGear verify projector models and compatibility?

Yes. Our team confirms each unit is a valid model from the original manufacturer and checks compatibility with common lenses and accessories. We document lamp or laser hours, test inputs and outputs, and note any quirks so you know exactly what you're buying.

Do projectors include built-in audio?

Some projectors have built-in speakers, but they're typically not powerful enough for professional applications. Most pro AV setups pair projectors with external audio systems for better sound quality and coverage. If you need help building a complete system, our team can point you toward compatible audio equipment.

What is the difference between a laser projector and a lamp-based projector?

Lamp-based projectors use a traditional bulb that needs replacement after a certain number of hours, typically 2,000 to 5,000 depending on the model. Laser projectors use a solid-state light source that lasts significantly longer, often 20,000 hours or more, with less brightness degradation over time.

How do I choose the right projector for my venue?

Start with three factors:

  1. Screen size: Larger screens require more lumen output to maintain a bright, clear projected image
  2. Ambient light: Brighter rooms need higher lumen brightness projectors to compete with surrounding light. Pairing your projector with an ambient light rejecting projection screen can also improve visibility in challenging environments.
  3. Viewing distance: Match the projector's throw ratio to your installation distance (short-throw lenses for tight spaces, long-throw for distant mounting positions).

Not sure where to start? Contact our team and we'll help you find the right fit.

What does "lumens" mean, and how many do I need?

Lumens measure a projector's brightness output. The right number depends on screen size, ambient light, and image quality expectations. As a general guide:

  • Dark rooms (home theaters): 2,000 to 3,000 lumens
  • Conference rooms and corporate users with controlled lighting: 4,000 to 6,000 lumens
  • Large venues, outdoor events, and bright environments: 10,000 lumens or more

When in doubt, go brighter. You can always dial output down, but you can't add brightness that isn't there.
